Primary

(Age: 6 - 10):  In the primary department, we offer a hybrid curriculum made up of the Cambridge primary, the GES and British curricula. The aims of VIS primary education are:
To enable the child to live a full life and to realize  his or her potential as a unique individual
To enable the child to develop as a social being through living and co-operating with others and so contribute to the good of society
To prepare the child for further education and lifelong learning.
The curriculum is learner-centred. It emphasizes the importance of literacy, numeracy,  and language, while at the same time responding to changing needs in science and technology, social personal and health education, and citizenship.

Junior High
(Ages: 11 -  14): In the junior high school department, we offer two separate programmes, namely, the Cambridge Secondary 1 programme which prepares students for the Cambridge Checkpoint examinations in grade 8 (Checkpoint  3) and the GES curriculum which prepares students for the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) in grade 9.

VIS utilizes the Cambridge  Secondary 1 programme as a comprehensive syllabus-based curriculum detailing international learning objectives over a 3-year period. The culminating Cambridge Checkpoint Examination is the exit assessment offered to our students in Grade 8, upon the completion  of the third year. Students are assessed through externally standardized benchmark tests that provide detailed subject-specific feedback on a student’s strengths and weaknesses in key curriculum areas. The Cambridge Secondary 1 programme covers  all major areas of learning required in the first years of International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in three subject areas: English, Mathematics and Science.

We offer Cambridge Checkpoint assessment once during the year and the results provide both the school and student with comprehensive diagnostics reports set to international standards.
The Cambridge Secondary 1 Science is presented in four content areas: Scientific  enquiry, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Scientific enquiry is about considering ideas, evaluating evidence, planning investigative work and recording and analyzing data. The scientific enquiry objectives underpin Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which  are focused on developing confidence and interest in scientific knowledge. Environmental awareness and some history are also incorporated.

The Cambridge Secondary 1 English curriculum promotes an enquiry-based approach to learning to develop thinking skills and encourage intellectual engagement. The curriculum is presented in five content areas. Phonics, spelling and vocabulary,  Grammar and punctuation relate to use of English. Grammar and punctuation is further divided into Reading and Writing to reflect the different ways in which grammar and punctuation are applied in each of these skills. Reading, Writing, and Speaking and

Listening are about developing thinking skills and encouraging intellectual engagement. The learning objectives span knowledge and understanding. The curriculum encourages learners who are confident, creative and intellectually engaged, capable of applying  their skills to respond to a range of information, media and texts with enjoyment and understanding.

The Cambridge Secondary 1 Mathematics curriculum is presented in six content areas: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measure, Handling data and Problem solving. The first five content areas are all underpinned by Problem solving, which provides  a structure for the application of mathematical skills. Mental strategies are also key part of the Number content.  Together, these two areas form a progressive step-preparing student for the IGCSE level courses. This curriculum focuses on principles,  patterns, systems, functions and relationships so that learners can apply their mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject.

GES programme (BECE)
The objective of the BECE is for both certification and selection to Senior High Schools and Technical Institutions. Basic education connotes the attainment of certain minimum levels of educational  goals – the mastery of some basic knowledge and skills. The emphasis on junior secondary education is therefore to ensure every child is equipped with the essential knowledge and skills that can make him/her develop the ability to function effectively  in the society.
In other words, the need to make the first half of secondary education comprehensive is to ensure  the youth is equipped with the essential knowledge and skills that will make them interact meaningfully with their changing environment and adapt to the advancement in science and technology in the society.

This suggests the minimum pass levels required in all the subjects should define the criteria for basic education. Minimum educational requirements become synonymous with basic education.

Basic education concept therefore embodies a philosophy that has implications for assessment, grading and certification of junior high school graduates.
